Waiting for their reward at the door

The dogs are going nuts with this weather.  It was fine while it was nice and snowy and everything was frozen.  Now it is a slushy melting muddy dirty mess.  That would be Mess with a capital M.  The sidewalks are still an obstacle course littered with boulder sized snow/ice chunks that have been plowed from the roads and covered with grime.  Dirty petro grime.  Not anything you would even consider walking a dog’s paws through.  And the streets are rivers of slush with trecherous submerged ice patches just waiting to snare the unwary pedestrian.

Then there is the backyard.  There is a small island of ground/grass that has emerged from the rain.  Mostly it is very compact snow with a rippled surface from thousands of paws trampling over it the past few days.  Slick on top and even the dogs are wary of running across it – thankfully.  So Cricket has resorted to spinning with her jolly ball on the small 2′x6′ section of patio that has been cleared to the concrete.  It is a sad state of affairs.

We have been training in the living room doing balance work and agility heel and various commands.  They can’t get enough.  I have never seen all three dogs be so intense and focused.  “More work, mom!  More work!”  They plead.  Even the Nix has consented to climbing up on yoga balls and spinning and twirling – just for something to do!  I have promised them all that we will walk early in the morning regardless of the weather.  I am hoping the forecast for more snow was just a usual miscast.  But walk we will, regardless.

Merry Christmas!

White stuff ate my ball! by Cricket

What is this white stuff?
What is this white stuff?

Until I had a conversation with Sasha who showed me how to eat the white stuff.  Now my ball is cleaner.  But what happened?  No one lets me stay out and play in this stuff as much as I want (but look at the brown spot behind my white ball – I dug!).

I want more!

Schooling Cricket

Saturday, December 6th, 2008

Here I am, Sasha the water-loving, passing on my deep knowledge of bubble-baths to my young padawan apprentice, Cricket (that’s her on the right).

Border collies have a lot of jobs.  We catch balls, we cuddle moms, we watch over our people, we play flyball or do agility, or for the luckiest of us all, we herd sheep.  This is one of our jobs.

Here’s the routine:

Using our sharp ears, detect the bathwater has been turned on

Race upstairs, speeding so fast that we pass through or across or over and objects or people in our way

Bound into the bedroom and then the bathroom

Skid to a stop

Pretend we’re not breathing hard, while staring at the pretty bubbles.

We are not allowed to eat the pretty bubbles (I haven’t quite succeeded in getting that part through Cricket’s pointy little head yet)

What will happen next is that one of the moms will reverently approach the bath and be baptized in bubbles.

We watch that part, too.  It’s best if we don’t move at all until the water runs noisily down the drain.

Now you, too, know the secret of border collies and bubble baths.
